FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRICITY SYSTEMS AND ECONOMICS
by
Dr Andreas Poullikkas
Chairman of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA)

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Cyprus Network is organizing the above lecture on Wednesday the 13th of April 2016 on 18:00 hours at ELECTRON room, Head Office of Electricity Authority of Cyprus – 11 Amfipoleos street Strovolos . The lecture is open to non-members and will be presented in Greek.

Power system engineering is about keeping things in balance. Not just the balance between generation and load or between production and consumption of reactive power. It is, also, about the balance between the cost of energy and its environmental impact or the balance between the reliability of the supply and the investments needed to develop the system. In this seminar a general knowledge is provided on how power systems are designed and operated. This involves analyzing not only the characteristics of the various components (boilers, turbines, generators, lines, cables, transformers) but also how these components interact. Such interaction is presented using various simulation software for both power system analysis as well as electricity market economic analysis (unit commitment and economic dispatch).

Dr Andreas Poullikkas holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in mechanical engineering, a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in nuclear safety and turbomachinery, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in numerical analysis and a Doctor of Technology (D.Tech.) higher doctorate degree in energy policy and energy systems optimization from Loughborough University, U.K. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET). He is currently the Chairman of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) and the Chairman of the Cyprus Energy Strategy Council. In his professional career he has worked for academic institutions and for the industry, such as, the Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard University, USA, the Cyprus University of Technology (Professor of Power Systems and Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering), the Natural Gas Public Company (Member of the Board of Directors), Cyprus and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (the founder and head of the Research and Development Department). He is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Power Technologies, Member of the Editorial Board of the journal Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments and the author of various peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. He is, also, the author of six books, a referee for various international journals, serves as a reviewer for the evaluation of research proposals related to the field of energy and a coordinator of various funded research projects. He is the developer of various algorithms and software for the technical, economic and environmental analysis of power generation technologies, desalination technologies and renewable energy systems.
